Korea Brain Research Institute (KBRI) and UK-Dementia Research Institute (UK-DRI) at King’s College London (the Department of Basic & Clinical Neuroscience, Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience) are seeking applications for students who wish to undertake PhD degrees at King’s College London. This PhD programme is funded by the KBRI and King’s College London, with support from UK-DRI, and will provide outstanding students from South Korea and the UK with opportunities to train with the aim of developing the next generation of scientific leaders in Dementia research. The UK-DRI is a national consortium focused on cutting-edge dementia research.
 
The PhD degree requires students to undertake original research work under the supervision of two members of academic staff over three or four years. All students initially register for an MPhil, with the opportunity to transfer to a PhD after 6 to 18 months (subject to passing a transfer viva). Students are given the opportunity to carry out research training at King’s College London (two years or more) and KBRI in South Korea (one year or more) over the four years of PhD period. Three PhD studentships are available.
 
Available PhD research projects:
The PhD research projects will be focused on the understanding neural mechanisms both in normal and pathological conditions.
 
The available research project for the 2019-2020 programme (start before June 2020):

   1. Understanding the molecular and cellular basis of TDP-43 proteinopathy (Dr. Hyung-Jun Kim & Professor Chris Shaw)

   2. Drug discovery for Dementia; early consequences of pathophysiology and pathology in Alzheimer’s disease (Dr. Hyang-Sook Hoe & Professor Kei Cho)

   3. Investigation of neurovascular coupling in Alzheimer’s disease (Dr. Do-Geun Kim & Professor Peter Giese)
 

For the 2020-2021 programme (start in October 2020), the list of PhD research projects and the corresponding Co-Advisors will be posted in March 2020:
 
Eligibility: PhD studentships are open for South Korean or British citizenship holders only. The applicants should have BSc and MSc degree. If your first language is not English, you must be able to provide recent evidence that your language skill is adequate for PhD programme in King’s College London (more information: www.kcl.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/apply/entry-requirements/english-language).
 
Application procedure
For the 2019-2020 programme: Firstly, identify a research area which most closely matches your own interests and make contact with the appropriate supervisor. You will then need to complete an application form, available from our website (www.kbri.re.kr) and return the application to studentship@kbri.re.kr.
 
For the 2020-2021 programme: The list of available research project and co-Advisors will be announced in March 2020 (www.kbri.re.kr). After initial screening of applications, short-listed candidates will be asked to identify their research interest (eg., research project and the co-Advisors).  You will download available application form from www.kbri.re.kr and return completed application form to KBRI (studentship@kbri.re.kr).
 
Tuition and stipend
Successful students have their full international or UK-home student tuition fees covered by the KBRI and KCL and receive an annual living allowance. The Scholarships are valid for up to 4 years.

Registering for a PhD programme
Successful applicants will be required to obtain approval for their research project prior to registration. The relevant form, which should be completed in collaboration with your prospective supervisor
